The Aquatic Setting partitions the marine environment into four levels describing the freshwater influence, geomorphology, depth, tidal regime, and benthic light environment.
Nested Tidal Zone and Benthic Depth
The Tidal Zone (Level 3) and Benthic Depth (Zone 4) are nested within each Aquatic Setting Subsystem (Level 2), but can be applied at Level 1 (System) if there is insufficient detail for a Level 2 classification.
Unknown or Not Assessed
An Unknown, or Not Assessed classification can be applied at any level within the hierarchy.
