Report
Abrolhos Marine Park surrounds the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, which contain the largest seabird breeding area in the eastern Indian Ocean at over one million known breeding pairs. The marine park is host to a unique community of tropical and temperate species owing to the mixing of the warm tropical waters of the Leeuwin Current and colder waters more typical of lower latitudes. The northernmost breeding colony of sea lions can be found sharing habitat with an abundance of reef sharks, and coral reefs are interspersed with benthic algae.
Abrolhos Marine Park is located in the Commonwealth waters, approximately 27 kilometres south-west of Geraldton. It covers 88,060 square kilometres, and has National Park, Habitat Protection, Multiple Use and Special Purpose zones. – Parks Australia
Abrolhos ranges from 12 to 5,916 metres depth, with an average depth of 3,795 metres. The majority of the park (57%) falls within the abyssal zone (4,000-6,000 metres). [View on map] The mapped areas of the seafloor are dominated by Plane (69%) and Slope (14%) geomorphology. [View on map]
